Birmingham's Bullring Indoor Market will be closed all day today (Tuesday August 17th) for contract cleaning amid a mouse infestation.

Rodent and cockroach droppings were spotted inside the ten year-old building, prompting environmental health and pest control officers to close down all 140 stalls within the premises.

The city council said the market is expected to re-open to customers for business on Wednesday. The Bullring Outdoor Market, the RAG Market and the Wholesale Market are all unaffected.

A spokesman for the city council said the signs of mice and cockroach activity were identified on the site on Monday and the area will now be subjected to an intensive deep clean as a preventative measure.

Alan Docherty, vice-chairman of the Indoor Market Traders Association said that although it is needed, the cleaning will have an adverse effect on local business.

"The market does need to be cleaned, but it could have been done over the weekend when it was less disruptive," he told the Birmingham Post.

"Most businesses are already suffering with the poor economy and struggling to get by on six-day trade."
