Local authorities in Bristol have announced that the city's contract cleaning bills top £38,000 per year.

The council said the figures represent how much is spent on cleaning the city's streets and especially, removing chewing gum from pavements and walkways.

A spokesman for Bristol City Council said some 4,400 pieces of chewing gum are removed in the city's Broadmead shopping centre alone every week.

Councillor Gary Hopkins, cabinet member for waste strategy, commented: "Chewing gum is one of the worst types of litter because it's difficult to clean up and it's a nuisance for anyone who gets it stuck to them."

In an effort to reduce the amount of litter left on Bristol's streets, the council is taking part in an annual awareness campaign run by the Chewing Gum Action Group.

As part of the campaign, a six-foot tall chewing gum character will hand out paper packs for people to use to dispose of their gum. Litterers will also face £75 in penalty fines, the council said.

Mr Hopkins added: "We have had great success with chewing gum campaigns in previous years and seen a significant reduction in the amount of gum on the streets as a result of them."
