The number of towns in Ireland with litter problems is on the increase, new figures reveal.

According to the latest survey from campaign group Irish Business Against Litter, out of 53 towns surveyed, just over half were found to be litter free - down from two-thirds in a similar study conducted last year.

The town of Wexford was judged to be the cleanest in Ireland, thanks to the "consistently high standards of maintenance of the environment" and an effective contract cleaners.

Sligo, Killarney and Letterkenny were also found to be the cleanest towns in their respective provinces, with Waterford claiming the title of the cleanest city.

Meanwhile, Tallaght, Portlaoise and County Laois attracted censure for their poor cleanliness levels. Naas, County Kildare and Midleton in County Cork were also judged to have serious litter problems.

In terms of cities, Limerick gained the dubious honour of most littered city, although it improved its rating from "litter blackspot" in 2009 to just "littered" this year.

Local residents have been invited to take pictures of litter problem areas in their neighbourhoods and submit them to local authorities as part of a "litter twitter" drive.
